Lion takes long jump as district track meet opens

ROYSE CITY -- Dijoun Sheppard won the boys long jump and
Jessica Franklin took second in the girls long jump to lead
Greenville High School on Wednesday’s opening day of the
District 10-4A track and field championships.
Sheppard leaped 22 feet 7 1/4 inches to win the event by
nearly five inches over Matt Rich of Royse City. Cobbie
Johnson of Greenville also earned a trip to the Region II-4A
meet in Denton by finishing third at 21-9 1/2.
Franklin, who was third last year at state in the triple jump,
is headed to regional in the long jump after leaping 17-9 1/2
to finish second to Brianna Richardson of Rockwall-Heath (18-2
1/4). Krystal Pickron of Royse City also earned a regional
berth by finishing third at 16-8.
Franklin also clocked the fastest qualifying time in the
100-meter hurdles at 15.24 seconds and ran the fifth-fastest
200 preliminary time at 26.80. Timeka Sandifer of Newman Smith
led the 200 qualifiers at 25.689.
Cobbie Johnson, the defending champion in the boys 100 and 200
dashes, led qualifiers in both events at 11.22 and 22.33.
Sheppard, the defending champion in the boys 110 hurdles, led
the qualifiers with a 15.23.
Matt Rich of Royse City won the boys pole vault, clearing
13-6.
Tristian Farley of Greenville also earned a regional berth by
finishing third in the boys shot put at 46-6 1/2. Teammate
Manon Steward was fourth with a 45-5 1/2.
The meet resumes today with the first of the remaining field
events at 1 p.m. The running finals will start with the girls
4x400 relay at 6 p.m.
