GREENVILLE -- Back on the road again.
That’s the story for both the Greenville Lions baseball and
Lady Lions softball teams, who’ll continue District 10-4A play
tonight.
The 3-9 Lions, who’ve yet to play a home game, will travel to
Carrollton to take on the 7-7 Newman Smith Trojans at 7:30
following the 4:30 junior varsity contest.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Greenville
but was moved to Carrollton because of maintenance issues and
wet conditions. Because of problems with their field, the
Lions have only practiced twice outdoors since afterschool
practice began on Jan. 29, according to Lions coach Cody
Salyers.
The Lions are 0-3 in district play after falling 7-2 at
Highland Park and Royse City 8-3 in district games last week.
“We were actually in both of the games until the fifth
inning,” said Salyers. “It was 3-2 against Royse City when we
just fell apart.”
The Lions allowed six unearned runs against Highland Park.
“We dropped two fly balls,” said Salyers. “But we haven’t been
able to take fly balls (in practice).”
Newman Smith is 1-2 in district play including an 11-3 loss on
Friday to Rockwall, an 11-1 win last Tuesday over R.L. Turner
and an 11-6 loss to Highland Park. Marcos Campos led the
Trojans against Rockwall with a triple. Matt Patterson homered
and doubled against R.L. Turner and Brandon Mims slugged a
triple and a double.
The 9-7 Lady Lions, who’ve only played two home games so far
this season, will head to Carrollton for a district game at
R.L. Turner. Game times are at 5 and 7 for the junior varsity
and varsity contests.
The Lady Lions are 1-3 in district play after dropping
decisions of 5-1 to Newman Smith and 7-3 to Royse City last
week.
Rachael Cook slugged three doubles to lead the Lady Lions
against Royse City. Leanah Halverson and Katie Threndyle also
slugged doubles in that game.
R.L. Turner started off the season slowly, winning just one of
its first nine contests. The other Lady Lions’ first victory
was in a district game against Highland Park, prevailing 3-1.
