GREENVILLE -- Greenville’s Lions avenged a 4-3 loss at North
Lamar with a 1-0 District 20-4A soccer victory over the
Panthers on Saturday afternoon at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
The final score was misleading because the Lions had an 11-3
advantage in shots on goal.
Ryan Wilhelm fired in the game-winning goal midway through the
second half after a series of deflections. Chris Gutierrez and
Evan Snider shared the assist.
The Lions were close to scoring on several other
opportunities. Andrew Carrillo’s shot in the first half
bounced off the right post of the goal.
The Lions also had a shot bounce off the crossbar on the goal.
North Lamar’s goalkeeper also saved some other Greenville
shots that were headed to the goal, including a header by
Wilhelm.
North Lamar didn’t test Greenville’s goalkeeper Luis Torres
very much as Torres finished with two saves.
Wilhelm, while back on defense, saved another shot.
“I thought we played really well today,” said Lions coach Jeff
Crank. “We moved the ball around really nice. It’s a matter of
whether we play smart or not.”
The Lions upped their season record to 4-4-6 and district mark
to 3-2-3.
North Lamar dropped to 5-10-3 for the season and 5-3 in
district play.
Greenville will honor its seniors on Tuesday in the final home
game. The Lions also have another district road game set for
Friday at Commerce.
Greenville’s junior varsity blanked North Lamar’s JV, 3-0.
