Win keeps Lady Lions in playoff hunt

GREENVILLE -- The Greenville Lady Lions, behind Olivia Carter’s 24 points and 16 rebounds, helped their playoff chances with a 60-54 win over Royse City at the Lions Den Tuesday.

Maddy Crabtree also pumped in 17 points and Mackenzie Cooper tallied nine points for the Lady Lions, who avenged a 40-39 loss suffered at Royse City on Dec. 18. Crabtree finished with six steals and three assists and Cooper tallied six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

This win puts Greenville at 14-10 overall and 5-5 in district, putting them back in contention to gain one of the playoff spots in District 10-4A.

Tayler Young banked in 16 points to lead the visiting Bulldogs.

Greenville was ahead 16-8 after one quarter. The Lady Lions led 39-25 at halftime. Greenville was ahead 47-41 after three as Royse City outscored the Lady Lions 16-8 in the third period of play.

The fourth quarter was a 13-13 standoff which gave Greenville the 60-54 victory.

“LaBrandi Mayberry played good defense down the stretch,” said Greenville coach David Sanders. “Our team missed 22 free throws tonight, which is too many.”

Mayberry finished the game with five rebounds and two steals.

Shanterria Riley also chipped in four assists and two steals for Greenville.
