GREENVILLE -- The Paris Wildcats won their opening game of the
basketball season, 59-43 over the Greenville Lions on Saturday
afternooon in the Lions Den.
Greenville dropped to 1-3 on the young basketball season with
its second straight loss at home.
The Wildcats took control early, outscoring the Lions 14-6 in
the first quarter and 8-4 in the second quarter to own a 22-10
advantage at halftime.
Barr led the visiting Wildcats as he tallied 13 points in the
game. Martin added 12 points, while King and Jenkins banked in
11 points each and Rollerson added 10 points.
Manon Steward led Greenville with 10 points. Jarel Nelson was
next for the Lions with nine points and Dijjoun Sheppard
chipped in eight.
The Lions had trouble scoring in the second quarter as they
went almost five minutes without a bucket. Alton Dennis broke
the drought, scoring a layup with two minutes to go in the
first half. That ended a 6-0 Wildcat run.
Then after stopping Paris the Lions got bucket from Dennis
from the top of the key to cut the Paris lead to 20-10. But
Will Martin of Paris gave the Wildcats a lift heading into
halftime, sinking a jumper from the corner.
The Wildcats, who led 39-23 after three quarters, stretched
their lead to 56-38 in the fourth quarter.
Then the Lions went on a mini-run, scoring four points in a
row. That made the score 56-42.
Paris scored three of the game’s final four points to stretch
its final lead to 16.
