Defending state champion wins district girls cross country title

MESQUITE -- Defending state champion Sara Sutherland of Highland Park won the girls 3200-meter race to lead the Scots to the team title on Saturday at the District 10-4A cross country meet.

Sutherland ran away from the field to win in the time of 11 minutes, 39.61 seconds. Second place at 12:03.02 went to Vanessa Boyer from Rockwall-Heath. Megan Siebert of Richardson Pearce finished third in 12:07.22.

Highland Park totaled 25 points to win the crown as Rockwall-Heath was second with 56 points, followed by Rockwall (73), Richardson Pearce (100), Royse City (158), Carrollton Newman Smith (171), Carrollton R.L. Turner (192) and Greenville (224).

Royse City’s 2007 Class 3A state 400-meter champion Megan Fausto led the Lady Bulldogs with her 28th place finish at 14:02.68. Lacy Haren was next for Royse City in 30th place, followed by Blair Stiles (34th), Sarah Shelton (35th), Mallori Baumann (37th) and Stacy Hood (47th).

Emma Hollingsworth was Greenville’s top finisher in 38th place with a 14:33.32. Julie Hernandez was 43rd, followed by Greenville teammates Andre Brincefield (44th), Bridget Gray (49th), Norma Ramirez (50th) and Brenda Hernandez (51st).

Rockwall used a two-three-four finish from Corey Miller, Jacob Phillips and Joel Gibbs to edge Highland Park out for the boys team title. Rockwall scored 26 points. Highland Park managed 32 pointas as Rockwall-Heath was third (99), R.L. Turner was fourth (104), Newman Smith finished fifth (123) and Richardson Pearce was sixth (129).

Royse City and Greenville did not have enough runners to figure in the team standings.

Matt Galvin of Highland Park covered the 5000-meter course in 16:47 to win the district championship.

Juan Atayde led Royse City with a 31st place finish at 20:22.59. Matthew Rich was 40th and Kevin Brennin finished in 42nd place.

Rory Curtain was Greenville’s top finisher in 35th place (20:35.92). Nathan Bermudez was 41st, Ben Gilbert took 43rd and Jason Williams was 44th.
